World Down Syndrome Day

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day is a time to raise awareness for people with Down syndrome and to celebrate their many accomplishments.  It is celebrated globally each year on March 21st (3-21), signifying the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome present in individuals who have trisomy 21.
World Down Syndrome Day is particularly special this year, as 2012 marks the first year that is will be recognized by the United Nations!  U.N. Officials will mark the holiday by gathering members of the Down syndrome community at U.N. headquarters in New York for a conference on issues like education, independent living, research and working with the media.
